In partnership with the University of San Diego’s Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice and its Monitoring, Evaluation, Assessment, and Learning (MEAL) Certificate Program, the Prebys Foundation is piloting its Research & Learning Fellowship for the 2026 – 27 academic year!

This applied practicum gives graduate students a front-row seat to the practice of learning in philanthropy — bridging theory and practice through hands-on experience in research, evaluation, community engagement, and strategic decision-making.

"As someone whose own professional journey was shaped by transformative internships and fellowships, I know firsthand the power of opportunities that connect passion, purpose, and professional possibility. It's especially meaningful to bring this opportunity to life in alignment with Prebys' Youth Success priorities like: expanding access to quality education and training while creating pathways for emerging leaders to explore their passions, discover their purpose, and shape their careers."
- Dr. Novi

Through this initiative we’re not just researching and learning for discovery-sake. We’re hoping to create opportunities to practice it, challenge it, and advance it right here in San Diego.

We’re excited for what’s ahead and for the emerging scholars and leaders who will help shape how our sector learns and evolves!

At the heart of this fellowship are two emerging leaders bringing their experiences, curiosity, and perspectives to our work.

Meet our inaugural Research & Learning Fellows:

Kaya:

Kaya Hartley is a Master’s student in Peace and Justice Studies at the USD’s Kroc School and recently completed a fellowship with the City of San Diego’s Division of Race and Equity under the Independent Budget Analyst’s Office. Her background spans project management, classroom teaching, service as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mexico, and experience in international development, all grounded in a commitment to advancing equity through education and public policy. Her work focuses on improving and creating more inclusive systems and expanding opportunities for underserved communities.

Veronica:

Veronica DeHart is a Graduate Student at University of San Diego’s Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, where she is working towards her Master’s degree of Peace and Justice. Veronica’s passions lie in bridging gaps between historically divided communities, concentrating her studies on mediation and Restorative Justice.

Veronica’s experience is varied, including international research, victim’s advocacy for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, and leadership in wildland fire. Throughout each position, Veronica has remained committed to cultural humility and widening her perspectives, while challenging dominant discourses through meaningful conversation. Currently, she serves her community as an Emergency Department Technician with Palomar Health during the school year, and as a Wildland Firefighter in the summer.

Our Approach to Learning with Community

Since launching our Strategic Plan in 2023, learning has become a core practice at Prebys Foundation—helping us stay accountable to community and guiding how we fund, partner, and show up across our impact areas. In this video, Dr. Novi Yarber shares how learning with community is shaping a more intentional, informed approach for the foundation.
