Who was Conrad Prebys?
Conrad Prebys moved to California in 1965 with $500 in his pocket. He became extremely successful in real estate and very quickly began giving back to the community he now called home. Over time, Conrad’s philanthropy helped strengthen organizations devoted to healthcare, medical research, visual & performing arts, higher education, youth development, and more.
The Foundation’s Journey Began in 2020
Conrad’s lasting gift was to ensure his assets would benefit the people of San Diego County, and the Foundation’s initial years have been dedicated to realizing that vision. The first board of the Foundation immediately began directing grants to nonprofits serving the San Diego community, with a particular focus on supporting organizations during the challenging early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As the Foundation concludes the foundational phase of its 2023 – 2024 strategic plan, it expresses deep gratitude for the invaluable partnership of its supporters. The feedback, insights, and collaboration received have guided the Foundation as it embraces a community-driven approach. In 2023, the Foundation launched its new strategic plan, focused on responsive, research-informed grantmaking.
From flood relief efforts to vital investments in the arts, healthcare, and youth workforce development, the Foundation has worked to meet some time-sensitive needs while investing in long-term community impact. Through open applications, targeted requests for proposals, and community-led initiatives, the Foundation has sought to align its work with the evolving needs of San Diego.
