Leading the Way in Outdoor Equity and Youth Empowerment

Prebys Leadership Awardee Ben McCue, the Executive Director of Outdoor Outreach, is a visionary leader dedicated to connecting youth with the transformative power of nature. For over two decades, he has worked to ensure that all young people, especially those from under-resourced communities, have the opportunity to experience and benefit from outdoor activities. His leadership has not only expanded access to nature but also fostered resilience, improved mental health, and empowered countless young individuals to become advocates for positive change.

From an early age, Ben found solace and identity in nature. His experiences — such as living in Costa Rica as a teenager — taught him that the outdoors is a universal language that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers. This deep personal connection to the environment has shaped his career and leadership style, inspiring him to create opportunities for youth to discover their own connection with nature.

Transforming Lives Through Outdoor Outreach

Under Ben’s leadership, Outdoor Outreach has connected over 20,000 youth to meaningful outdoor experiences. The nonprofit goes beyond simple recreation; it provides transformational opportunities for young people, helping them see themselves as leaders and changemakers. Collaborations with organizations like Rady Children’s Hospital and the County Probation Department have demonstrated how outdoor programs can significantly improve health and educational outcomes for vulnerable youth.

One of Ben’s most significant achievements has been the development of multi-generational programs that engage entire households in outdoor activities. These initiatives strengthen family bonds and provide youth with a sense of belonging and purpose.

Advocating for Equity in Outdoor Access

Ben is a strong advocate for breaking down systemic barriers to outdoor access. His work has led to the establishment of new statewide grant programs and major legislative victories that enhance outdoor opportunities for nonprofits and tribal programs. By ensuring that nature is accessible to all — regardless of socioeconomic background — he is fostering a healthier, more equitable San Diego.

Beyond programmatic impact, Ben’s leadership philosophy is rooted in humility and collaboration. He believes in fostering partnerships rather than competition within the nonprofit space, valuing relationships as the foundation for lasting change. As he puts it:

We need to invest in the potential of our youth to address complex issues. Sometimes, we just need to get out of the way and provide them with the space to thrive.”

Building Empowering Spaces for Youth

Despite the demands of administrative work, Ben remains deeply connected to Outdoor Outreach’s mission by regularly engaging with youth in the field. This hands-on approach keeps him grounded and continuously inspired by the young people he serves.

His vision extends beyond Outdoor Outreach, as he sees tremendous potential in restoring natural ecosystems, such as the Tijuana River Valley. Drawing inspiration from his international experiences, he calls for civic leadership that listens to community needs and works toward revitalizing neglected areas.

Through his dedication, innovation, and compassion, Ben McCue has made San Diego a more inclusive and vibrant place. His work continues to inspire and transform lives, ensuring that the outdoors remains a welcoming and empowering space for all — one adventure at a time.
